If I've Said It Once, I've Said It A Thousand Times!

Dear Friend,

I know you mean well. But we have to work together to fight this spam. And as much as I love you all, if you're receiving this message, you're not doing your share!

You recently sent an email to me with my email address included among a large number of other emails in the CC: field. That means that my email address probably has become the number one entry on their "send these people every interesting tid bit on the face of the earth" list. If you know me, you know I don't appreciate receiving a lot of that kind of "literature".

I want to hear from you when you have information that you and I both know I will value and appreciate. You know me. You know what I read. More importantly, you probably know what I DON'T like to spend my time downloading and reading. That's why you're my good friend.

And I know a lot of clients and friends who do NOT want to see their email included among hundreds of others in a forwarded email. So, since I've said this at least a thousand times to a thousand other email owners, I'll share this treasure with you one more time.

How to "hide" your client, customer, or friends' email addresses when you send out an email:

  1. Assuming you're using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express (and if you're not, use the HELP panel on your email program to find the equivalent), you can select CREATE a new message or REPLY or REPLY ALL or FORWARD -- it's all the same.
  2. When the panel opens up and you're showing ONLY:
    • To:
    • CC:
    • Subject:
  3. Move your cursor to the top gray border of the message panel, where it says FILE ... EDIT ... VIEW etc.
  4. Click on VIEW and a drop down menu will open up.
  5. The very first option says ALL HEADERS and probably has no check to the left of it.
  6. Click on ALL HEADERS and a check will appear to the left of it, but more importantly ....
  7. NOW, FINALLY, when the CREATE, REPLY, REPLY ALL or FORWARD email panel displays, you will see:
    • To:
    • CC:
    • BCC: <======== Yeah! from your old typing days: BLIND Carbon Copy!!
    • Subject:
  8. For most email programs, putting an address in the BCC: field will mean it is hidden from view. This is a good thing.
  9. So, always put MY email in the BCC: field whenever you are going to send out your mass mailings. Sound like a deal?

    Now, that's a good friend!

Thank you! And feel free to share this page with YOUR friends whom YOU'VE told to hide YOUR email at least a thousand times, too.
